QUALITY & SUSTAINABILITY

Sustainability in Manufacturing - Green and Responsible in Design

At Caledan, sustainable manufacturing isn't an afterthought, it’s engineered into our process from start to finish:

  • Cradle-to-Cradle Steel
Steel is the only truly recyclable structural material, capable of being reused repeatedly without quality loss. Every Caledan frame contributes to a circular economy that extends value far beyond its first use.

  • Waste-Minimising, Off‑Site Production
Our use of CNC precision cutting and off-site manufacturing dramatically reduces material wastage, potentially lowering on-site waste by up to 90%.
  •
  • Locally Rooted, Low-Impact Supply Chains
Based in South Wales, we source and roll our steel locally, reducing transportation emissions, supporting regional employment, and delivering faster, more sustainable project support.

Sustainable Manufacturing in Action

Caledan’s Primaframe system was central to delivering Wales’s first Passivehaus‑standard social housing in Trecenydd and Trethomas. The project, commissioned by Caerphilly County Borough Council and delivered with Willmott Dixon, achieved exceptional airtightness, and the build-up exceeded expectations for fire and acoustic performance. This is a clear example of sustainability at the core of project outcomes.

Caledan have recently completed a first ‘Passivhaus’ project using the Primaframe System. Location : Trecenydd & Trethomas Client : Caerphilly Council Main Contractor : Willmott Dixon Caledan are very pleased to have recently completed a first ‘Passivhaus’ project using the Primaframe System. The penalised system, developed in conjunction with Willmott Dixon to the requirements of Caerphilly County Borough Council, achieved incredible air tightness results whilst using the British Gyspum Glasroc X external sheathing board, which has resulted in the project being awarded Passivhaus status. In a recent UKAS accredited fire test the Primaframe ‘through wall’ build up surpassed expectations and achieved 90 mins, integrity, insulation & load bearing requirements, again whilst utilising British Gyspum products. Similarly, impressive results were achieved when testing the loaded Primaframe acoustic floor build up, which also exceeded expectations.

Sustainability - Built into Our Ethos

Caledan’s commitment to sustainability goes beyond manufacturing, it’s a core part of our identity:

  • Forever Steel
Steel’s infinite recyclability ensures that the investment made in every frame carries on for decades through countless repurposing.
  • Zero-Waste Ambition
Through factory production and lean manufacturing, we make waste negligible, never building our systems into a wasteful design.
  • Community-Centred Production
Our Welsh facility brings skilled jobs and training into local communities, while sourcing raw materials nearby cuts carbon emissions and underpins our sustainability-first model.

Why These Matter

  1. Ethical Material Use – Choosing Caledan means choosing steel that’s renewable, long-lasting, and responsibly managed across its full lifecycle.

  2. Reduced Footprint – Lean, controlled off-site production means lower waste and fewer transport emissions compared to more fragmented supply chains.

  3. Local Value Creation - Manufacturing close to home isn’t just green, it helps build skills and economic strength in the South Wales region.
